How to get colors for your designs – Color Palettes

When I first started making random sketches, I always had trouble selecting colors. Browsing through beautiful blogs would lead me to believe that I had no color perception (I still probably don’t). I was always curious to know how people got that perfect colorful their designs/blogs. Then I realized that they don’t always open swatches and just randomly drag the eye dropper tool until they find the perfect color.

So, below mentioned are some ways to get colors for your digital journeys.

Everything mentioned below can be accessed for FREE!

1. Eye Dropper extension on your chrome

The eye dropper extension helps you pick up colors from web pages. Here’s a short video on how to install and use it.

2. Online Color Palettes

This is an awesome place to start if you have no idea about colors.

a. Color Palettes

Color Palettes is something that I use on a regular basis. Few colors are picked from each photograph and their hex codes are provided. All you have to do is click on the hex code and the code gets automatically copied.

b. Adobe Color

Another great site for palettes. You can search for particular palettes.

For example, I want a color palette to paint a set of dinosaurs. I just type in dinosaurs and I can see all user submitted/saved palettes for dinosaurs!

3. Adobe Capture

This is a very cool app from Adobe and my only tool for picking colors while outdoors. You can create your own palettes! All you need is the Adobe app on your phone. Point your phone camera at anything and select the colors to create a palette! You can then access this palette directly on your adobe illustrator and other applications.

By the way, it does more than capturing color. Check out the video in the link above.

Now, all you have to do is have fun with these colors!

What a cool idea. Thanks for the tip and links. And for visiting my blog. I presume these palettes can also be imported into Lightroom and IrfanView?

Glad you found them useful :). The palettes from Adobe color will be available on almost all your Adobe apps once you ‘save’ them (you should be signed in obviously!). You can view them in ‘Libraries’. I’m not sure about IrfanView though, I have never used it! But you can always copy the hex code and use them in your apps.
