Download the Butterfly Sketch
If you’d like to follow the tutorial without having to draw the initial sketch yourself, you can download the sketch I use in the video.
You can import the sketch directly into Adobe Fresco and use it as a guide while you work on your illustration.
How to Import the Sketch into Adobe Fresco
- Download the butterfly sketch to your iPad.
- Open Adobe Fresco and create a new document.
- Import the sketch as an image layer.
- Lower the opacity of the sketch layer.
- Create a new layer above it and start drawing!
Once you’re happy with your artwork, you can hide or delete the sketch layer.
Download the Colour Palette
Choosing colours can sometimes be one of the hardest parts of creating digital artwork. To make things easier, I’ve put together the colour palette used in this butterfly tutorial.
You can use these colours exactly as they appear in the tutorial, or use them as a starting point and experiment with your own colour combinations.

In this tutorial, we’ll work through the process of creating a butterfly illustration from sketch to finished artwork.
You’ll learn how to:
- Import a sketch into Adobe Fresco

- Choose and use brushes in Adobe Fresco
- Block in the basic colours of the butterfly
- Add details and texture to the wings
- Create shading and highlights
- Build up colour gradually for a more painterly effect

This project is suitable for Adobe Fresco beginners, but even if you’ve been using Fresco for a while, it’s a lovely project for experimenting with colour and brushes.
Experiment With Your Own Butterfly Colours
One of the things I love about drawing digitally is how easy it is to experiment.
Once you’ve finished following the tutorial, try creating another butterfly using completely different colours.
You could try:
- Bright tropical colours
- Shades of blue and purple
- Warm oranges and yellows
- Pastel pinks and blues
- A monochromatic butterfly
- A completely imaginary colour palette
There are no rules when it comes to digital art!
Why Draw in Adobe Fresco?
Adobe Fresco is a fantastic app for digital artists, illustrators and beginners who want to explore drawing and painting on an iPad.
One of my favourite things about Fresco is the variety of brushes available. You can create artwork that feels very digital and graphic, or experiment with brushes that mimic traditional media such as watercolour, oil paint and other artistic textures.
For this butterfly project, you can experiment with different brushes to see how they change the appearance of your artwork.
If you’re new to Adobe Fresco, don’t worry about getting everything perfect. The goal of this tutorial is to have fun, experiment and become more comfortable with the tools.
Tips for Creating Your Butterfly Illustration
1. Work on separate layers
Layers make digital illustration much easier because you can make changes without affecting the rest of your artwork.
Try keeping your sketch, base colours and details on separate layers.
2. Don’t worry about perfect symmetry
Butterfly wings are symmetrical, but you don’t need to stress about this because the symmetry tool does the job for you.
3. Build up your colours gradually
Instead of trying to create all the shading in one go, gradually build up your colours.
Start with your base colour and then add darker and lighter shades to create depth.
4. Add plenty of details
The patterns on butterfly wings are what make them so interesting to draw.
Once your basic butterfly is complete, have fun adding spots, lines, dots and other decorative details.
5. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Digital art makes experimenting incredibly easy.
Try different brushes, colours and layer settings. You can always undo your changes or create a duplicate of your artwork before experimenting.
Ready to Draw?
Download the butterfly sketch and colour palette, open Adobe Fresco on your iPad, and follow along with the YouTube tutorial.
And remember – you can use the techniques from this tutorial to create butterflies in your own style. Once you understand the basic process, try changing the colours, wing shapes and patterns to create your own collection of digital butterflies.
Happy drawing!
