Why Use Pixel Brushes in Adobe Fresco?

One of the things I love about Adobe Fresco Pixel Brushes is the variety of textures you can create.

Pixel Brushes are raster brushes, which means they work particularly well when you want your digital artwork to have a more traditional, textured appearance.

Depending on the brush you choose and the way you use it, you can create anything from soft shading to bold, textured marks.

For this bird illustration, we’ll use Pixel Brushes to build up the different areas of the bird gradually rather than trying to create everything perfectly in one go.

This is also a great way to get comfortable with working digitally because you can experiment, undo your mistakes and work on separate layers.

Step 1: Create Your Sketch

We’ll begin with a simple sketch of the bird.

Don’t worry about making the sketch perfect. At this stage, the goal is to establish the basic shape, proportions and pose of the bird.

Pay attention to:

  • The overall shape of the body
  • The position and size of the head
  • The shape of the beak
  • The placement of the wings
  • The feet and tail
  • The direction the bird is looking

A simple sketch underneath your artwork can make the colouring process much easier.

Step 2: Choose Your Colours

Once the sketch is ready, it’s time to start adding colour.

For this project, I’ve put together a colour palette that you can use while following the tutorial.

You can, of course, choose your own colours. One of the fun things about digital art is experimenting with different colour combinations.

Step 3: Start Painting with Pixel Brushes

Now we can start building our bird using Adobe Fresco Pixel Brushes.

Rather than trying to add every detail immediately, start with the larger areas of colour.

Think of your illustration as a series of simple shapes.

Working from large shapes to smaller details makes the illustration much easier to manage.

Step 4: Add Texture

Don’t Be Afraid of Texture!

One of the things I enjoy most about digital painting is that you don’t have to make everything perfectly smooth.

Try different Pixel Brushes and experiment with:

  • Brush size
  • Opacity
  • Colour
  • Pressure
  • Layering different brush strokes

Step 5: Add the Details

Now it’s time for the fun part – adding the details!

When you’re working on small details, zooming in can be helpful.

However, remember to zoom out regularly too. It’s easy to get caught up in tiny details and lose sight of the overall illustration.

Step 6: Add the background and Finishing Touches

Finally, we’ll take a step back and look at the whole illustration.

This is the perfect time to make small adjustments to the colours, shadows and highlights.

You might also want to add a simple background to help your bird stand out.
